How do I download a file from the Web? How can I view it later? What is a Zip
file? How can I tell if my browser needs to be updated? How can I help keep my children
safe on the Internet? How do I update my anti-virus program? We have the answers to those
questions and more. Here are some links every newbie to the Internet should know.
Internet Security
This is in the news a great deal these days. Your home Internet
security is very important to keep your computer running smoothly and
your private information safe. There are four major threats when you
are online: malicious attacks on your computer, viruses,
trojan horse programs, and spyware.
To help prevent attacks on your computer when connected
to the Internet a firewall program
is necessary for all users. We recommend the free or paid version of
ZoneAlarm or
Outpost, although many others are good as well.
There are many anti-virus programs available. Two of the
more popular ones are Symantec's Norton Antivirus
and McAfee's Antivirus program. No user should be
without one. Many anti-virus software venders, such as Trend
Micro, offer a free online virus check.
Spyware programs
are notorious for slowing down your computer and making your system
unstable. We recommend at least one anti-spyware program, though two
would be ideal. Lavasoft's Ad-Aware
is a good start since there is a completely free
version to get you acquainted with this fine product. We also
recommend Spybot:
Search and Destroy, and the freeware Spyware
Blaster, both excellent complements to Ad-Aware.
Much useful information about spyware
can be found at Spywareinfo.com.
This site also has links to other
fine programs which are useful for home Internet security. They
also have an online
spyware scanner. This site is strongly recommended to all users.
